The Sony PXW-FX9 is a professional full-frame camcorder that blends key technologies from Sony’s VENICE, FS series, and Alpha cameras into one highly capable production tool. It combines Alpha-style autofocus, VENICE-level colour science (including S-Cinetone), and the practical, modular usability associated with the FS line—making it well suited to freelancers, production companies, rental houses, broadcasters, and fast-paced crews.

At its core is a 6K full-frame Exmor R back-illuminated CMOS sensor, designed to deliver high resolution, strong low-light performance, and a pleasing cinematic shallow depth of field. The FX9 uses full-frame oversampling to produce detailed 4K footage with 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording, helping preserve colour information for grading and improving overall image quality. It also offers a wide dynamic range, rated at 15+ stops of latitude, allowing you to hold detail in highlights and shadows in challenging lighting conditions.

The camera’s colour pipeline is a major highlight. S-Cinetone (inherited from VENICE) provides a polished, filmic default look with natural skin tones and a softer tonal roll-off, while S-Log3 with S-Gamut3 / S-Gamut3.Cine supports more advanced grading workflows.

Autofocus is another standout feature. The FX9’s Fast Hybrid AF combines phase-detection and contrast AF for fast, smooth performance and confident subject tracking. It offers very wide AF coverage (up to 561 points, covering most of the frame), and supports all E-mount lenses, giving operators a lot of creative flexibility. AF controls are highly adjustable, including AF Transition Speed (from very slow to very fast for different shooting styles) and AF Subject Shift Sensitivity, plus face detection options such as Face Priority and Face Only AF.

For exposure control, the FX9 includes a revolutionary electronic variable ND filter designed for full-frame. It provides smooth, linear adjustment (from 1/4 ND to 1/128 ND), letting you adapt quickly to changing light—like moving from indoors to outdoors—without constantly swapping ND filters or compromising depth of field.

Workflow and connectivity are built for professional environments: built-in Wi-Fi, 12G-SDI support, compatibility with XAVC Intra/Long and MPEG HD422, and dual card slots for XQD media. It also supports 16-bit RAW output (with appropriate expansion), a wide range of accessories including the XDCA-FX9 Extension Unit, and compatibility with many FS7 accessories. Power options include high-capacity BP-U batteries, supporting longer shooting days.

Finally, the FX9 records stabilisation metadata via its built-in gyro, enabling smoother handheld footage in post—often producing results that can feel gimbal-like, while speeding up stabilisation workflows.
