About

The brief was clear: a fast-paced 60-second film featuring three players (including Hugo Ekitike), built for vertical delivery. With a tight schedule and multiple moving parts, the production needed to be efficient, precise, and visually consistent across every setup. This is exactly where vertical social film production lives or dies — speed on set, consistency in camera choices, and a workflow built for 9×16.

Production approach

We built the camera package around speed and flexibility while keeping the look elevated.

Two Sony FX9 bodies captured in landscape with a 9×16 crop, each paired with a 70–200mm. This gave us roaming singles, clean isolation, and cinematic shallow depth of field. To complement the tighter coverage, we added a Sony FX3 in portrait orientation, fitted with a 16–35mm Sony G Master. That setup delivered wide vertical frames with natural energy and strong spatial context.

This approach meant we could capture dynamic close-ups and expansive vertical coverage, while also ensuring native 9×16 acquisition where it mattered. As a result, we reduced heavy cropping in post and preserved image quality — a key detail in vertical social film production.

Technical workflow

All footage was captured in UHD at 25p using XAVC-I, shooting S-Log3 Cine and monitoring in s709. This gave us strong latitude for the grade, which helped balance mixed lighting in the training ground press room while still delivering vibrant tones, controlled highlights, and modern contrast.

Lighting + environment

Rather than over-lighting, we leaned into the authenticity of the location. We used the existing press room environment to retain atmosphere, then refined the finish in post for a clean, contemporary look. In addition, that approach kept the set fast and consistent across setups.

Result

Vertical framing needs a different mindset — purposeful eye-lines, clean negative space, and movement that plays naturally in 9×16. Combined with snappy pacing, the final film lands as cinematic, engaging, and optimised for Instagram and mobile-first viewing.
