About
Taking on a Cross-Country Production
Filming a documentary series in America is a huge task that requires planning, precision, and the right team. For this six-part, one-hour production, I led a four-person camera crew with the Sony F55. This camera is built for high-end work and delivers cinematic images with flexibility on set. It proved ideal for documentary filming across the United States.
Building the Right Camera Crew
Our crew worked as a tight unit to handle the challenges of shooting a cross-country documentary. Alongside myself as DOP, we had a B-camera operator for extra coverage, a camera assistant keeping our kit in check, a drone operator capturing aerial shots, and a DIT (Digital Imaging Technician) managing footage and preparing it for post-production. As a result, we managed a fast-paced journey across America with confidence and created compelling content that matched the ambition of the project.
Filming Across Iconic US Cities
The shoot took us coast to coast. In New York, we captured the relentless energy of the city. Meanwhile, in Miami, we embraced vibrant colour and coastal light. Detroit gave us industrial grit, while Los Angeles offered golden sunsets and sprawling streets. Las Vegas dazzled with neon, and finally, Philadelphia brought history and character. Each location became a character in itself, shaping both the story and the visual style of the documentary series in America.
The Role of the Sony F55
The Sony F55 was key to our success while filming a documentary of this scale. For example, it handled low light, bright sunlight, and everything in between. From handheld action to steady controlled setups, the camera adapted with ease. In addition, the drone footage added sweeping scale, giving the series both wide cinematic views and intimate close-up detail that immersed audiences in each setting.
Overcoming Challenges on the Road
Producing six one-hour episodes demanded planning, stamina, and adaptability. Every city brought fresh challenges — from weather shifts to location access. However, each also gave us new creative opportunities. Overall, this project showed how filming a documentary series in America can capture the stories, scale, and spirit of a nation in a way that feels both cinematic and real.
