Behind the Lens of a Football Documentary

Working on Tango Squad FC Season 1 was an exciting challenge in camera operator sports filming. The series followed a group of young footballers as they trained, competed, and chased their dreams under the guidance of professional mentors. The project blended the energy of street football with the production values of a global brand campaign. Being part of the crew gave me a front-row seat to capture both action and emotion.

Shooting on the Sony FS7

For this production, I operated the Sony FS7, a versatile and reliable camera widely used in sports filming and documentary production. Its Super 35mm sensor, slow-motion capability, and colour depth made it ideal for high-energy football scenes. It was also well suited to intimate behind-the-scenes storytelling. Shooting in S-Log3 gave us a wide dynamic range, essential for changing outdoor light conditions.

The FS7’s flexibility was another major advantage. We could switch quickly between handheld setups, gimbals, and tripods. As a result, the production team adapted easily when following players both on and off the pitch. This agility was key to capturing training drills, match action, and personal conversations with equal impact.

Filming in Manchester and Liverpool

Locations across Manchester and Liverpool gave the series a raw and authentic feel. Community pitches, training grounds, and urban backdrops reflected the grassroots spirit of football. Each location added atmosphere and showed how the game inspires passion and ambition in every setting.

As a camera operator, my role was not only to follow the speed of the game but also to anticipate emotion. For example, last-minute goals, tough coaching sessions, and reflective moments off the pitch required careful timing to capture truthfully. This balance of movement and feeling is what makes camera operator sports filming so rewarding.
